about

This song was commissioned by Spark and Echo Arts in 2014 as a response to the following passage of Matthew 24:

"And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. All these are the beginning of the birth pangs."

How must the earth feel, I wondered, hearing that all the pain and suffering, all the death and destruction, is only the beginning of her labors? How must the companions, working in the field, feel when they're told that "one will be taken, and one will be left"? How must one feel, seeking wisdom in the wilderness, to be told the spirit they've found is the wrong one?

Back then I knew so little about what apocalypse might feel like; about what losing a child might feel like - but I had some questions, and I had some premonitions.

lyrics

It shouldn’t hurt this much
The thousandth time
But each pain robs my brain of blood
And leaves me bruised and swollen.

It shouldn’t hurt this much
The millionth time
But each scream drains my soul of love
And leaves me cold and broken.

What if I am taken and you are left?
What if I, forsaken, am left to tend the plow
And die a hundred deaths?
How can I be lost or found without you?
How can I be damned or saved without you?

What if I see him where I’m not supposed to?
What if I hear him when I’m not supposed to?
What if I see him in the inner rooms?
What if I hear him in the wilderness?

It shouldn’t be so cold
To die a million deaths
Only to be told
It was only the beginning.

If this is the beginning, Lord,
Then can’t we begin again?
Why do you build a house only to tear it down?
Why do you bear a child only to eat it up?
And why do you build a world only to burn it down?
